With so much emphasis placed on cleaning and vacuuming carpets, it is easy to forget that the key to a carpet’s appearance is actually what is underneath. The carpet padding supports and helps to shape the carpet, and over time, spills and stains that are not properly cleaned can seep into the padding, causing permanent stains that will still be visible, even after a thorough, professional steam cleaning.
Of course, replacing the padding does involve a lot of time and furniture moving, which is the main reason that most people put off this task until it is absolutely necessary. But even so, when it comes to having a professional looking office space, the appearance of the carpet is a major contributing factor.
You should replace your carpet padding if:
There are large stains and odors that you can’t seem to get rid of, even through deep cleaning. This is because, once again, the stains and odors are not located within the carpet itself, but within the carpet padding. Even if the carpet itself is cleaned, once it makes contact with the padding underneath, it will begin to absorb all of the odors and stains once again.
The carpet is visibly run down. When carpet padding is severely compressed, it can cause low spots in the carpet and can also cause the carpet itself to fray and wear out. Remember, replacing carpet padding is usually much less expensive than paying for brand new carpet.
The carpet padding wasn’t laid properly in the first place. This will be obvious on close inspection. If the carpet looks lumpy in some spots and extremely thin in others, it is time to lift the carpet and have the padding relayed.
Remember, simply laying new carpet over old, worn out padding won’t solve the problem. If your carpet padding needs to be replaced, do it as soon as possible. If time is an issue, keep in mind that many companies can perform this task over the weekend while you and your employees are gone so as not to interfere with a business day.
