Improving Indoor Air Quality

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Indoor air quality is an important consideration, particularly when it comes to office environments.  With the amount of time that office works spend indoors, it only makes sense to take steps to keep your indoor air as fresh as possible.

Ask your San Diego cleaning service to use mechanical, rather than chemical cleaning methods, whenever possible, and make sure that you and your employees do the same. This can be as simple as using cleaning cloths and only using chemical based dust removal products when necessary.

Also, make sure that the HEPA filters in your office building are replaced on a regular basis. These filters collect and remove dust, dander, pollen, and other common indoor air irritants.

If you are doing any cleaning on your own, pay close attention to the labels on the different household chemicals, and never mix chemicals together.  Always make sure that the rooms are properly ventilated as well.

How can you improve indoor air quality naturally?  Try adding a few plants to your office.  While they do require care and maintenance of their own, plants are natural air purifiers, and in addition, can serve as decorative accents.

A healthy environment indoors will help to keep you and your employees healthier and more productive.

Choosing An Office Aquarium

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

When it comes to decorating and brightening up an office space, few things have the same kind of instant visual impact that an office aquarium can have on clients and employees. Here are some tips to keep in mind when selecting and placing one your office:

It is a good idea to keep it simple-large saltwater aquariums are beautiful, but they are also heavy and require a lot of maintenance.  A basic freshwater aquarium with a few colorful but low-maintenance fish is the best choice for most offices. Of course, if you do decide to purchase an elaborate set-up, just make sure that you are well aware of and able to keep up with the required maintenance.

Speaking of maintenance, your aquarium should be placed away from expensive leather chairs and Persian rugs and other costly items whenever possible, just in case of leaks or cracks in the tank. You should also position your aquarium so that it is easy for you to access all of the components that require maintenance.

When choosing fish, make sure that they have enough space in your tank. When in doubt, buy less fish than you think that your tank can hold. You should always buy fish from a reputable source, and take the time to research the particular needs of the fish that you are buying. Nothing brings the atmosphere of an office down then an aquarium full of dead or sick fish.

With a little planning and knowledge, you will soon have a beautiful aquarium for your office.

San Diego Restaurant Cleaning Tips: Your Restaurant Floor Drain

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Your San Diego restaurant cleaning routine  needs to include your kitchen floor drain. These drains are very important when it comes to maintaining sanitary conditions, but if you allow your drain to become dirty and clogged, it will create unsanitary and expensive problems.

Your restaurant cleaning service will likely include regular cleaning of your floor drains as part of their services, but it is still your job, and the job of your employees to make sure that your drain remains clean and free of debris in between professional cleanings.

First of all, pay attention to the types of materials that you let collect in the drain. Grease is a notorious clogger, and if your floor drain is also the main service drain for your dishwasher, this may be a problem.  Regularly declogging with a solution that your restaurant cleaning service recommends is the best way to prevent greasy build-up

It goes without saying that it is important to keep large pieces of trash and other debris away from the drain.  In a busy kitchen environment, it can become difficult to keep an eye on what goes in to the floor drain (and what doesn’t) which is why it is important to always. . . .

Examine your drain on a regular, if not daily basis.  A few minutes now and then can save you a lot of time and money in the future and go a long way towards preventing trouble down the road.

Your San Diego Restaurant Cleaning Checklist

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

San Diego restaurant cleaning encompasses a multitude of tasks, which is why it is so important to develop a cleaning routine early on.   Whether you are in charge of a small family-owned restaurant with just a few employees, or a large corporate chain with many, you will find that organization is the key.  Break large tasks down into smaller ones and delegate responsibility whenever possible.

One way to do this is to rotate responsibility for various jobs on a chart.  Another way is to simply have each employee responsible for cleaning and maintaining their designated work area.(s)  Regardless of the method that you choose, your San Diego restaurant cleaning checklist should include the basics, among other things:

  • Bathroom cleaning and sanitizing
  • Floor sweeping, mopping, vacuuming
  • Sanitation of all food preparation services
  • Sanitation of all counters and tables
  • Appliance cleaning and sanitization

These tasks should be done on a daily basis. Other, more involved tasks, should be done on a monthly basis and include:

  • Cleaning of oven range hoods and fans
  • Thorough cleaning of restaurant booths
  • Ice machine cleaning and sanitization

Ask your cleaning service for help in creating a more detailed and thorough list of cleaning tasks to help you and your employees stay organized and efficient.  Remember, cleanliness is the most important part of any successful restaurant business plan.

Office Lobby Decorating Tips

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Your office lobby is the first impression that your prospective and current clients and employees will have of your office space, and your business. For this reason, it is important to put some thought into how you decorate. Even if your budget is limited, there are still some ways to make sure that your office lobby looks its best.

First, measure the amount of available space. Even if you have a large amount of space to work with, it never hurts to know exactly how much space you have.  This will help to eliminate the chance that you will find the perfect couch, desk, chair, or art piece, only to discover that you don’t have room for it.

Next, regardless of your space or budget, you will need a desk for your receptionist to use. You should position this desk so that it is the focal point of the room, and the first thing that people see when they enter.

While it is always tempting to purchase elegant, expensive furniture, keep in mind that office furniture withstands a lot of abuse. Many people sit on it, spill things on it, etc. and it will probably be necessary to move it frequently, if for no other reason, so that your cleaning company can vacuum and dust behind it.  Durable, moderately priced furniture is always your safest bet. If you have a decorating budget, save your money for extras like an aquarium, paintings for the walls, and other aesthetic touches.

Speaking of paintings, a few well-chosen paintings and wall hangings will go a long way towards brightening up any office. Choose pieces that compliment the colors and theme of your overall decorating scheme, and consider the aesthetic value of plants—even fake ones, which of course require less maintenance.

Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to a professionally decorated office lobby.

Hard Vs. Soft Water

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

When it comes to home and office cleaning, learning the difference between hard and soft water is important. Most water found in homes and businesses is water that has been commercially treated with softeners, but in some cases, hard water can be present as well.  Both hard water and soft water can be found in nature, but soft water, for many reasons, is the type that is most desirable for residential and commercial use.

Hard Water: The main source of hard water is from wells, and many people who live on farms  and in rural areas have hard water and usually use a water softener to condition it. Water that is considered hard contains calcium and magnesium in large quantities. These minerals mean that when cleaning with hard water, more soap is required to clean.

Soft Water: some soft water occurs naturally, but more often, soft water is a result of water softeners, which filter magnesium and calcium from the water.  This water is better for your skin and hair, and is easier to clean with.  The harder the water being treated, the more sodium is added by the water softener in exchange for the calcium and magnesium. For people on low sodium diets, it is recommended that potassium be substituted for salt in their water softeners.

Dishwasher Care And Maintenance

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Between visits from your San Diego janitorial and cleaning company, it is important to make sure that your dishwasher stays clean. Whether you have a large, commercial washer for your restaurant kitchen, or a standard sized machine for your office kitchen, there are several things that you can do to make sure that it runs smoothly and keeps your dishes clean.

After a while, every dishwasher runs the risk of becoming a source of unpleasant odors as well as a breeding ground for bacteria, due to food particles, grease, and soap scum build up.  On a regular basis, use a sponge to clean out the crevices and spaces where particles gather, making sure to rinse with soapy water.

Remove the bottom rack and clean away any debris from the drain area, which can cause the water pump to clog and lead to leaks and costly repairs. On the top rack, place a small cup of plain white vinegar in the center and run a dishwashing cycle. This is a natural way to remove odors, sanitize, and further clean your washer.

Like all other appliances, the best way to keep your dishwasher clean and running efficiently is with regular maintenance. Ask your San Diego cleaning company for more tips on how to get the most out of your dishwasher.

San Diego Restaurant Cleaning Tips: Local Water Conservation

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

We all know how important water conservation is for the environment.  It is estimated that the average restaurant uses hundreds of gallons of water every day. Water is essential for the cleaning of utensils, floors, and for a multitude of other tasks. Did you know that without proper waste handling and cleaning, wastewater can enter storm drains and actually contribute to the level of pollution in storm drains?  Water is one of our most precious natural resources, which is why it is important to both conserve and protect it whenever possible.

What can you do?

  • Never allow solid pollutants to be washed down your sink or floor drains. These include grease, oil, food, Styrofoam, and chemical cleaning agent residue.
  • Make sure that your dumpsters are in good condition and free of leaks. Otherwise, food waste placed into these dumpsters can leak out and be washed into local storm drains.
  • Never dump your waste water from floor cleaning or other activities into the street. Instead, poor it into a mop sink.
  • Wash items, such as garbage cans, kitchen floor mats, and filters near your floor drain or in a janitor’s sink, where the water will not be directed into a storm drain.
  • Make sure that all water used in the cleaning of your restaurant is directed into septic system or sewer drains.
  • Above all, take the time to hold meetings with your employees to remind them of these practices.  A little conscious effort today goes a long way towards clean water for tomorrow.

Eco Friendly San Diego Restaurant Cleaning Tips

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Is your San Diego restaurant environmentally friendly? If you aren’t sure, then the chances are good that it probably is not.  Eco friendly cleaning practices take work and planning, but are well worth the effort in the long run.  You have a responsibility to make sure that your restaurant does not contribute to the problem of over pollution and over contamination of local resources.

  • Other than proper disposal of waste water, which is absolutely crucial, you should also make sure that when cleaning enclosures, out door seating areas, or trash cans and using bleach or other harsh chemicals, never let these chemicals drain into the parking lot, street , or gutter.
  • When spills happen, use a dry removal method, like spreading cat litter on the floor, instead of automatically rinsing spills and subsequently sending the spill into the storm drain.
  • Clean your grease traps once a week to prevent build up
  • Always dispose of grease properly.  Do not pour it into gutters or sewers
  • Send bulk grease to be recycled into bio-fuel
  • Use eco-friendly, environmentally safe cleaning products as alternatives to harsh chemicals whenever possible.

These are just some of the many ways that you, your employees, and your San Diego restaurant cleaning service, can do your part for the environment.

Why is eco friendly restaurant cleaning so important? For one thing, it creates a healthier work environment for you and your employees, which in turn contributes to a healthier restaurant environment overall.   For another, it is the responsible thing to do.  Water, air, and surface contamination can all be greatly reduced and prevented simply by taking the time to properly clean and dispose of waste materials.

  • Taking the time to explain to your employees the impact that their actions have on the environment is a crucial step.
  • Post up friendly reminders near dumpster and trash containers to remind your employees not to dispose of liquid waste in these receptacles.
  • Hold regular meetings to go over the importance of eco friendly cleaning practices, pollution prevention, and the roll of each individual in the pollution prevention process.
  • Include pollution prevention as one of the components on your employee performance evaluation checklist.
  • Use labels to remind employees where to dump and not dump wastewater
